Core Curriculum

Challenging and motivating students to take responsibility for their learning is a major goal of all our learning programs. We base our current curriculum on the Victorian Curriculum. The Victorian Curriculum F–10 sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian priorities and standards We see Literacy and Numeracy skill development as fundamental to learning in all other areas. In addition to English and Mathematics, we utilise an Integrated Inquiry approach that allows students to actively investigate the way our world works.

Physical Education

‘Developing healthy and active bodies and brains’

Physical Education is an essential aspect of a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle and helps to build self esteem, confidence, cooperation and fitness. Regular, enjoyable physical activities are provided which allow children to acquire the skills necessary for participation in sport and leisure pursuits. Our experienced PE teachers seize every opportunity for our students to be involved in a huge variety of sporting activities. The major facets are body control and spatial awareness, athletics, ball skills, gymnastics, major and minor games and swimming/water safety.

Students in our Senior School participate in friendly competition with district schools. Children with advanced skills have the opportunity to compete at higher levels.

We offer all our children access to a varied sporting program. Swimming, athletics, football, soccer, cross-country, softball, netball and volleyball are just some of the formal sports that are offered. Sporting activities help build links with parents, the local community and beyond. We encourage children and parents to take advantage of local sporting competitions on the weekends. As with all our programs, we urge children to ‘have a go’. It’s great to win, but participation and sportsmanship are high priorities at Springvale Rise Primary School.

Visual Arts

‘Fostering creativity and artistic expression’

Visual Arts is highly valued at Springvale Rise Primary School. We believe learning about Visual Arts is fundamental to the development of the whole child, promoting creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and social interactions. The Arts are a powerful mode of communication through which students explore and construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them. Visual Arts provide students with a wide range of opportunities and means to respond to their experiences and engage with historical, social and cultural perspectives. Students are stimulated to think and to articulate their thoughts in new ways, and through a variety of media and technologies.

The impact of our amazing Visual Arts program is clearly evident upon entering our grounds and permeates throughout the school. Students are involved in creative processes that encourage the development and expression of ideas using the arts. Drawing on imagination and innovation, students resolve problems which are inherent in art projects. Students develop an appreciation of artworks and discuss reflections about works of art, including their own to develop understandings of the principles of design and creativity.

‘ Inspiring tomorrow’s problem solvers’

STEM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!
Springvale Rise Primary School has a fully networked computer system. Students regularly utilise the digital tools provided by the school to support the development of essential learning and lifelong digital skills.

All students are able to take advantage safe and engaging technologies if they have signed parental permission. Students from Years 3-6 have access to email and the school has an active policy of copyright and safe cyberspace use. Students who behave inappropriately may need to be removed from the school network

Vietnamese

‘Broadening understandings through experiences with other cultures’

At our school, all students have the opportunity to learn more than one language. As a result, our students gain an appreciation and understanding of another language and culture. This enriches personal development and helps facilitate international mindedness.

In consultation with the Springvale Rise community, Vietnamese was introduced as the preferred language, other than English.
The students at Springvale Rise are encouraged to increase their understandings of the Vietnamese language through speaking, listening, singing, writing, reading and using audio-visual resources. All students from Foundation – Year 2 are involved in weekly Vietnamese lessons.

Our Mathematics lessons are fun, providing opportunities for learners to develop and practise problem solving, understanding, fluency and mathematical reasoning skills.

Students engage in a variety of games to support their fluency and recall of number facts. They use hands on materials daily, to support the development of their conceptual understanding, and gradually transition to using the written algorithm when solving the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Teacher’s provide differentiated, explicit instruction at a whole class, small group and individual student level, to support student’s skill acquisition and mathematical confidence.

Success Criteria and Worked Examples are provided for every lesson, they are visible and co-constructed in classrooms to support students with knowing what success looks like and the next steps in their learning. Learning languages in addition to English expands students’ literacy skills and enhances their ability to communicate effectively. It also deepens their comprehension of language structure, cultural nuances, and communication dynamics. At Springvale Rise Primary School, our teachers leverage our strong ties with the local Vietnamese community and our diverse school profile to offer an enriching Vietnamese Curriculum. This curriculum emphasizes authentic communication, cultural celebrations, and of course food, fostering a holistic understanding of language and culture among students.

Through our Vietnamese program, students gain insights into the interconnectedness of language and culture in communication. They reflect on their language learning journey, applying these insights across various educational contexts. Importantly, our program cultivates respect for diversity and encourages students to embrace different perspectives and experiences. By exploring Vietnamese culture, students develop a deeper understanding of how culture shapes individuals, including their own heritage, values, beliefs, and identity.

The Multicultural Kitchen Garden program is an evidence-based initiative that positively influences health by promoting food literacy and healthy eating behaviours. Through hands-on experiential learning beyond the conventional classroom setting, students develop lifelong skills. They engage in growing produce and preparing plant-based meals, which encourages them to explore healthy eating habits, discover new foods, and celebrate the diverse cultures within the Springvale Rise Community.

The program not only equips students with essential kitchen skills but also empowers them with practical recipes that they can replicate and share with their families at home. This holistic approach fosters a deeper connection to food, promotes healthier lifestyles, and strengthens community bonds through cultural appreciation and culinary exploration
